- We would like one Hand Beerâ¦please.
Left remembered that the bottle was far too big for one child hand.
- Yes, this I believe. Do you have any hand-ears? {Human beings said usually pennies}.
The merchant chuckled cheerfully of his own joke.
- Yes, of course we have.
Otherwise we could not hear anything.
Left thought that it was a strange question.
- I mean money.
The merchant has stopped laughing and then again looked down on them.
Right and Left looked at each other.
Money! They never thought about money. The twins had read about it in one of their dadâs many books; but they had not really understood why they had to spend money. They had never even had any money. At home, they had everything they needed. Perhaps their mum and dad had some money.
- No, we have no money.
Right were embarrassed that they penniless had tried to buy a Hand Beer.
- And you will still have a hand beer. It is not meant for small sizes like you. You should rather have a soda or an orange Juiceâ¦What are you really? You're hands! How do you drink?
The merchant stopped his flow of speech and wiped his forehead with a cloth.
- By our mouth!
Left was sick and tired of being looked at like this. Everybody believes that weâre a couple of strange animals that had escaped from the zoo. Why did it take him aged to discover, that they were Hands?
- Yes, of course through the mouth. Why didnât I immediately figure that out?
The merchant was ready to burst.
- What are you doing in this part of the city on your ownâ¦hand?
He chuckled again by his own joke.
- We're just out to have a look around.
Right moved closer to his brother.
- Canât you see that we're just two hands that are thirsty?
The merchant had never seen anything like it in all the many years that he had lived, and now he was soon 60 years old. Was he dreaming, or was he awake. He called on Michael, who was his assistant in the grocery store.
- Michael!
The merchant's voice was shrill.
- MICHAEL!
Just then Michael was lumbering into the store.
- Now what? What are you yelling for?
Michael stuck one finger into his ear and rotated it around, as if he would provide more room for the sound. So he better could hear when the shopkeeper shouted.
